Ophelia is a voicebank for the UTAU program.

Oh, Ophelia... heaven help a fool who falls in love.
—Ophelia, The Lumineers

Background[]

Ophelia was afflicted with a terminal illness and given a very short lifespan left to live. She was distraught, which was only worsened by how uncaring her family had been. They had treated her quite poorly throughout her life, and did not give her the type of support--both medically and emotionally--that she needed in the process. She had been accustomed to neglectful behavior.

Funnily enough, she had grown closer to the doctors and nurses that worked on her team more than her own family, who would oftentimes go days without coming to visit or check up on her. She was shown a level of disregard that no child could know, only amplified by being confined to her hospital bed due to her declining physical state causing her body to, in a sense, wither her strength away; all she had to do with her time is be lost in her own innocent, hurting thoughts.

After being moved from the intensive care unit that she oftentimes found herself in permanently, she was moved to a multi-patient room that housed those who required extra mental assistance due to their conditions, with an emphasis on trying to help Ophelia feel less lonely. Her 'neighbor' in the room was a man named Kureno, a man that was struggling heavily with psychosis, various delusions and was having issues with his tether to reality due to a series of events.

Kureno, being detached and incapable of holding very long conversations in this state, rarely spoke for long to her. However, due to the lack of people to talk to, she attached heavily to him. But she couldn't have anticipated the attachment she would've felt for a visitor that would come by often. He was a man that would visit Kureno religiously, always staying by his side and never expecting much. He had a sense of mystery to him. He rarely spoke either, but for completely different reasons and Ophelia sensed that: It was because he knew Kureno was having a rough time doing so.

Persistently, she would try to get the attention of this man, who would always give it. He wasn't the type to willingly go out of his way to speak with strangers, but it was obvious that he had an empathetic care for this girl and the state she was in. He could tell she had very little love in this world: He was there often--sometimes, he'd even sleep at Kureno's side through the night--and would never see anyone there to see her. This man's name was Axel, and he knew all too well of her situation.

He now had two people to come and visit. When Kureno would rest, Axel would give his full attention to Ophelia. They would share stories. She would light up like a candle when Axel was around, pouring out so many thoughts at once. Even the nurses and doctors noted how much of a spark of life his presence gave her, as if she finally felt something she had been missing. But this was going to come to a close sooner than either of them would have liked.

Axel could clearly tell that, in spite of her desire to continue speaking, her body language and tone struggled at many points. She would go into long coughing fits, or be too weak to grab her food or water. He would always help her as he could. Nonetheless, their bond did not cease to be. He was always there to speak and, more importantly, to listen. However, one day, Axel noticed something was off about her. She was at the end of the room this time, in the bed by the window, staring out, a sort of lost look on her face. When Axel queried, she answered that she wanted to look at the sky--a rainy one that day in particular; a cruel joke of the universe--, and that she was happy to see him.

They went about their normal conversations after Axel visited with Kureno. He still noted the peculiar nature of her today, but tried to not think much of it. When he was getting ready to leave for the day, she said she had something important to tell him. She did not know how such a thing had happened, but the parents had made the decision on her behalf legally to put her to sleep, to try to rid her of the pain of this life. Though, even a child could know that it meant something else entirely. Axel was completely taken aback and speechless, unable to comprehend what he was hearing. For the first time in their friendship, all he could do is hug her, and ask if she needed anything, to which she responded no.

Every single time he visited thereafter, Axel dreaded the date that she had told him. He knew he had one final thing he could offer the girl, perhaps the ONLY thing he could offer her. On the eve prior to her death day, he visited her in the dead of night. He explained to her what he was, and what he could do. He asked her if she would wish to live longer...that he could save her, and make the pain go away. Thus, for the last time they thought they would ever see each other, he bit her on the neck.

When he returned the next day, to see Kureno, Ophelia was gone without a trace. Shortly after, Kureno had been released, as his stability had become considerably better and his medication helped him greatly. Axel could not help but think about Ophelia and the time they had spent together, and where she was in the world. He only wished the best for her, and that she was some place better than the one she knew. She had deserved better, in his eyes.

But, along the way, she had found her way back to him. It had turned out that she had snuck herself out of the hospital once she regained the strength miraculously from the vampiric blood that had now run rampant in her veins. When a vampire passes a bite upon another, they are bound; linked by an insatiable desire of kinship and deep care. So when Axel was outside one day, walking on his own, to see her approach him, all he could do is drop to his knees and take her in his arms.

An intervention of the soul was something planned by the Angel Iyashi, a harbinger of light, protection and revival. Her strong connection to the young and innocent brought her to look after this child, preparing for any measure of pain her soul might feel when it crossed over into the afterlife. She was absolutely shocked to bear witness to what Axel had done, and the empathy and care he had shown in such a gray area. She still, at times, will linger in the presence of Ophelia, making sure that she is okay.

Now, she resides with Axel, never returning to the family that had mistreated her, and never seeing the confined walls of that hospital any longer. She's a vampire in training, of sorts. She will not hesitate to bite your ankles and feet, something Axel has tried to teach her against.

Concept[]

Everything stated about this character is CANON information. It is not mandatory that you make content following this information. She may be depicted in any way regardless of her canon information as long as it follows the UTAU software terms of use.

Ophelia can come across as a rather dejected girl with a knack for unintentionally seeming distant from conversations. Many mistake her downtrodden expressions or flat tone to indicate an upset demeanor, rather it's simply how she is at default. She is quite the opposite in many ways! She has a playful edge regardless, playfully tackling and wrestling with people and enjoys reading and watching horror and gothic-themed media. She did not get much of a chance to do too many things in her human life, so she is trying to experience all she can now.
