“This was probably a very bad idea !”
— Kevin Futarine
Kevin Futarine (二人音 ケビン ) is a character with multiple sets of voicebanks for the UTAU and OpenUTAU programs.
History[]
2012[]
Kevin Futarine was initially released on April 15th, 2012 as a character for the FRAloids³ series. His initial release featured a 4 pitch power-sell Japanese CV voicebank. He later received a Japanese append and a French CV. Later that year Kevin Futarine "Append" was released, with a new soft a power voicebank in CV Japanese.
2013[]
A new CV French voicebank was released for Kevin Futarine, called "Add-On"
2014[]
The pre-alpha version of Kevin Futarine STUDIO was teased, but the whole project was scrapped and started over in 2015.
2015[]
Kevin Futarine was rebranded "Kevin Futarine STUDIO" and was the launch character for the FR4loids series. Kevin Futarine STUDIO featured 2 voicebank packs called VP1 & VP2 and a standalone English voicebank.
STUDIO VP1 was released on August 21st, 2015 and featured a multipitch CVVC French, a multipitch CVVC Japanese, a monopitch Japanese VCV and a monopitch CVVC English voicebank.
2016[]
STUDIO VP2 was released on April 27th, 2016 and featured a multipitch CVVC French voicebank, with the CVVC+ reclist from FRAloids. Each of the pitches were also available as standalone voicebanks.
NB: A 18 pitch Japanese CVVC voicebank, called "Spectrum", was also recorded as part of the VP2 update, but was never released as it remains unfinished.
2019[]
STUDIO VPA was released on November 3rd, 2019 and featured a monopitch English Arpasing voicebank. This bank was initially planned to be from a VP3 update that was cancelled due to the closure of FRAloids.
2020[]
A brand new version of Kevin Futarine was released as "Kevin Futarine NEXUS". This new version featured a multipitch Japanese VCV voicebank for both UTAU and DEEPVOCAL. This pack was also planned to be larger, but the rest of the content was cancelled due to the closure of FRAloids.
2021[]
Another new version was released as "Kevin Futarine SPECTRUM JAPANESE". This new version features Kevin Futarine biggest Japanese voiceset to date, with a 15 Pitch VCV-CV multi-expression voicebank. This Voicebank is the first version of Kevin published after FRAloids's closure in 2020. This voicebank is also a reboot of the 2016 "Kevin Futarine STUDIO Spectrum" project, where a 18 pitch CVVC Japanese voicebank was planned.
2022[]
In 2022 a French voicebank was released as "Kevin Futarine SPECTRUM FRENCH". This new voicebank is part of the SPECTRUM era of Kevin, and features his biggest French voicebank yet, with 10 pitches of m2RUg, a new realist and recording method for French based on Njokis, an adaptation of the VCCV methods for languages from a roman and Latin origin. The voicebank was released along the relicst recording kit, and two new designs and alternative versions of the character: Kevin HAZE and Kevin DAZE.
2023[]
In 2023 the French UTAU group Fraloids made a comeback with the VORTEX era and Kevin Futarine SPECTRUM FRENCH was re-released with a new design and 3 new voice-colors, extending the SPECTRUM FRENCH to 20 pitches, divided in 7 voice colors. This new version of The SPECTRUM FRENCH, dubbed "Kevin Futarine SPECTRUM FRENCH V2" bank also got a physical release, making it the second time a version of Kevin Futarine received physical editions.
2024[]
In january 2024 a brand new reboot of the character was announced along with a new version of Kevin Futarine, for the first time as an AI voicebank for Diffsinger, using MILLEFEUILLE, a DiffSinger production model made by Imsupposedto and UFR for the production of French vocals. Kevin's samples are also part of the public version of the MILLEFEUILLE model used for training purposes. His nex reboot released on January 19th, 2024 as "Kevin Futarine PARADOX" and featured a model made of 7 voice colors, as well as some XLS capacity for both japanese and English. One of the 7 colors, was also revealed to be a separate chractere, P.O.U.F, which corresponds to Kevin PARADOX's sidekick.
Concept[]
Kevin along with his twin sister Kate were created as remakes of 2011's Kriss and Kelly Futarine. They kept their original voice providers, but were both recorded with better equipment. Kevin became the mascot of the Fraloids group and therefore was the character that was updated and rebooted the most frequently. As of 2023, he reboots were divided into 5 eras: RETRO, STUDIO, NEXUS, SPECTRUM and VORTEX. His backstory is different for each of his incarnations.
Etymology[]
- Futarine (二人音) - means "sound of two people" in reference of the Futarine series being voiced only by two voice providers.
Lore[]
In the VORTEX era, Kevin Futarine is the same Kevin as the one from the HAZE and DAZE universes from the SPECTRUM era, it's more of a continuation of their story, rather than a full reboot.
Kevin Futarine PARADOX is still the same Kevin as Kevin HAZE & DAZE V2, but two years later. This version of Kevin has regained most of his memories from his past selves after crossing the VORTEX, this is why he changed his main outfit to feature elements from all his previous incarnations.
In the VORTEX era, Kevin Futarine HAZE and DAZE got transported through the VORTEX and fused into a single being, able to shift between two different forms. The VORTEX he has gone through was opened by some Fraloids trapped in some kinds of limbo and trying to escape in a new universe.
SPECTRUM is a multiverse era, which means that the different representations of Kevin (SPECTRUM, STEAM, VAPOR, HAZE and DAZE) all have different backstories.
In the SPECTRUM Timeline, Kevin is 25 years old and lives on present day Earth that kept a cyberpunk/retro-wave aesthetic. He was born a single child. He is an amalgamation of all the previous incarnations of Kevin Futarine, as he is the result of their fusion to end the breach of reality. His companion, his a robot called CAELUS.
STEAM and VAPOR are Kevin variants from two interlocked universes. They are both 25 years old and live on a present day Earth that keeps a Disco aesthetic. Like all the other Kevin's from the SPECTRUM Multiverse, they are both single children. Both of them share the power of superhuman strength, resulting in their bulkier appearance. They both have a robot companion that doubles as a weight plate called ALT-R (although they both have different models)
Like STEAM and VAPOR, HAZE and DAZE are also Kevin variants from a set of interlocked universes. They are also 25 years old, but live on a slightly futuristic earth , with a darker cyberpunk aesthetic. They both are influencers (mostly streamers) and have the power of mind control. They both have a robot companion that doubles as a lighting rig, called LUMOS
In the NEXUS Timeline, Kevin is 24 years old and lives on present day Earth where he was born a single child. He has the power of observing different universes and timelines. His companion in this incarnation is a smart watch with and AI called Ann-X
In the STUDIO VP1 Timeline, Kevin is 19 years old. He lives in a futuristic society on Earth. He was raised by three robots, Artibus, Logos and Numerous after the death of his parents and sister. He survived the fatal car accident that killed his family thanks to his power of controlling the Dream Realm and navigate between two parallel universes.
STUDIO VP2 & VPA is the same Kevin during, and after the storyline of the STUDIO VP2 universe. VP2 is located on the parallel universe from VP1, separated only by the Dream Realm. However, this universe is a dystopia, where the entire world is controlled by the military forces of an unnamed antagonist. Although this universe is set in the future, the wartime theme gives it a slight 1940s era feel.
In the RETRO Timeline, Kevin is a 18 year old Space Warrior, traveling through time and space with his twin sister Kate and his mentor Lara Miraion after Earth was taken over by Melanie Kusarune, forcing humans to either leave the planet, or live in poverty. In this incarnation, Kevin doesn't have any special ability, but has an alien companion called "Kevy".
