Background[]
Andy is a pretty relaxed, nonchalant guy that's as soft-spoken as he is unbothered with people. He is not necessarily anxious but just does not enjoy being around people much of the time. He struggles to relate to them in the way most do and oftentimes envies how others can converse so freely among each other. He also received scrutiny for his appearance much of the time by people who didn't understand why he dressed the way he did. In day-to-day life, he kept to himself and it caused him to not enjoy making appearances around others, developing a chronic fear of showing his face to others.
This mixed with his adoration of the music he enjoyed. He would spend hours at a time constructing elaborate looks for himself. He became infatuated with various extreme morphs of his face via makeup and specifically the aesthetic of corpse paint. He grew efficient and excellent at crafting these images. It was in these moments when he'd look in the mirror, things just made sense. He could detach from his surroundings and his thoughts and live in the moment of the person that made him feel more at home in himself. And it wasn't that he disliked himself--it's solely that he felt more comfortable when he was able to be free.
Andy became increasingly obsessed with the outsider culture of the metal and rock world, as well as the counterculture of the black metal movement--a place that he would develop a lot of his corpse paint looks from. Here was something that was oddly welcoming about how unwelcoming it could be. It was, at the best of times, a place for the people who didn't have another place to go. It was a brother and sisterhood and it brought him closer to himself living vicariously through how lively things were. He'd spend much of his time watching live performances, wishing he could experience many of them. He was worried that he would lack acceptance in the scene, as he held a lot of the same beliefs towards the metal scene that he did towards the world.
Going to concerts, specifically those in the underground, allowed him to come out of his shell more as he would not be judged for how he appeared. Judgment wasn't something that was rampant at these events and he would oftentimes spend days preparing his outfits or makeup for a show. It was almost as if a second version of himself was coming out when he was surrounded with the people who enjoyed what he enjoyed. He would let loose and be much more confident and outgoing and unafraid to join a frenzied moshpit or strike up a conversation with a like-minded friend.
He has a strong relation to the band Ghost. Lyrically, he always took a liking to how anti-society their messaging was and how they mocked many of the conventional norms. But he mostly related to the facelessness of their aesthetic. There was something alluring to how they were able to make music that connected so deeply to him, without him ever knowing much about their identities for the longest time. It gave him a positive role model, of sorts; someone to look up to that could be unseen but still talented and important.
He tends to gravitate towards people with troubled backgrounds or that're not expecting anything out of him. He likes the company of people who sit in silence or aren't the most high-energy, but tolerates just about anyone.
